THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 54, Taylor 58
LOCATION: SAU Fieldhouse | Spring Arbor, Mich.
RECORDS: Spring Arbor 4-5 (0-2 CL), Taylor 5-4 (2-0 CL)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Taylor led by one after the first quarter, and slowly pushed its lead to six, 21-15, midway through the second. After leading by as many as eight, the Trojans would take a 29-23 advantage into halftime.
- Townsley guided Spring Arbor back, however, in the third quarter. The senior from Macomb, Michigan scored the first nine points of the period for the Cougars, trimming the deficit to one, 33-32, at the 6:17 mark. Moments later, Autumn Goggin would hit a jumper to put SAU back on top. The Cougars would outscore the Trojans 16-8 in the quarter, and take a 39-37 lead into the final period.
- Spring Arbor extended its lead to four, but would miss its next seven field goal attempts allowing Taylor to surge ahead with a 10-0 run. The Cougars refused to go down though, and responded with six straight points to even the score at 51-51 with 2:19 to play. However, the Cougars' cold shooting would come back to haunt them down the stretch, going just 1-for-5 from the field while the Trojans sank their free throw attempts to clinch the win.
- Townsley finished the game with 14 points and a season-high 11 rebounds while Driesenga posted 11 points and 10 boards. Goggin also scored in double figures with 10 points to go along with three assists and two steals. Aimee Konkel hauled in a career-best nine rebounds and Rachel Nelson chipped in seven points off the bench.
- Taylor held a slight 44-43 edge in rebounding, but the Cougars made the most of the second-chance opportunities, outscoring the Trojans 14-5.
FOR THE TROJANS
- The Crossroads League's leading scorer Kendall Bradbury led the way for Taylor with 17 points and nine rebounds. Cassidy Wyse followed with 13 points and 10 boards to register the double-double.
- The Trojans did not shoot much better than the Cougars, connecting on just 35 percent of their field goal attempts while going 1-for-14 from three-point range.
