Women's Basketball falls to defending champs

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University suffered a Crossroads League loss Saturday afternoon falling victim to the defending national champions, and No. 2 ranked, Marian University 72-45.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor held its own against Marian in the first quarter. The Cougars led by as many as five midway through the period after a three-pointer from Karly Bender and a layup from Rachel Driesenga. After the first 10 minutes, the two teams were tied 15-15.
  • However, in the second quarter, the Knights began to pull away. The visitors shot 53 percent from the field in the period on their way to outscoring SAU 20-12.
  • Marian extended its lead to double digits in the third and would never look back to win its sixth straight game.
  • Rachel Nelson led SAU with 10 points and eight rebounds. Kylie Townsley and Autumn Goggin chipped in eight points apiece while Townsley also added four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
  • Marian limited Spring Arbor to just 22 percent shooting on the night while hitting 46 percent of its shots. The Knights also held a slim 44-43 edge in rebounding, but did most of its damage in the down low, outscoring the Cougars 36-12 in the paint.

 
 

FOR THE KNIGHTS

  • Jenna Sullivan recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to pace Marian. Two other Knights joined Sullivan in double figures as Jessica Almeida finished with 14 points and Kellie Kirkhoff added 12.
  • Marian is currently tied at the top of the Crossroads League standings, along with two other teams, with a perfect 3-0 regular in league play.
