SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Facing an uphill battle from the start, the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team was unable to overcome the hump dropping its first contest of the season 90-62 to Siena Heights University on Wednesday.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 62, Siena Heights 90
LOCATION: SAU Fieldhouse | Spring Arbor, Mich.
RECORDS: Spring Arbor 2-1, Siena Heights 1-0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor stumbled out of the gates with four turnovers and just 1-for-7 shooting from the field in the first seven minutes of the game.
- Siena Heights capitalized on the slow start, racing out to a 16-4 lead early.
- The Cougars settled in, however, and battled back, cutting the deficit to four at the end of the first period.
- That would be as close as SAU would get though as the visiting Saints used a strong second quarter to build a 14 point halftime advantage that they would never relinquish.
- Senior Kylie Townsley had 14 points and six rebounds to pace the Cougars. Fellow senior Aimee Konkel and sophomore Rachel Nelson followed with eight points apiece while freshman Lindsey Lehman chipped in seven points, five boards and four assists off the bench.
- Siena Heights finished the game shooting nearly 50 percent (33-for-67) from the floor, including going 10-for-19 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Spring Arbor was limited to 33 percent (24-for-72) shooting.
- The Saints also controlled the glass out-rebounding SAU 51-36, including grabbing 17 offensive rebounds that they converted into 20 second-chance points.
FOR THE SAINTS
- Four Saints ended the night in double figures with Jaaliyah Arrington leading the way with a game-high 18 points. April Watson added 16 points and nine rebounds while Taylar McNeal and Clara Waidley registered 12 points apiece.
- SHU's Dynasty Washington was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range to total nine points.
- The Saints got 41 points from their bench.
