Spring Arbor rolls in non-conference tilt

LANSING, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team took to the road as they tried to push their win streak to four. Playing game two of their home and home set with Great Lakes Christian College, this one looked a lot like the first. The Cougars never trailed in this contest as they led by as much as 12 in the first half and broke it open in the second frame. Spring Arbor dominated the second half outscoring GLCC 64-34 and breaking triple digits for the second game in a row, winning 105-63.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor jumped to a quick lead 4-0 lead on a pair of Zach Medendorp buckets but could not quite separate from GLCC. The teams went back and forth for the first 15 minutes of this contest before the Cougars opened up a double digit lead on a Caleb Hogans steal and finish at the other end to make it 31-20 with 5:13 remaining.
  • The visitors would create their largest lead of the half on a Medendorp fast break finish with 11 seconds remaining, pushing the margin to 12 at the half, 41-29.
  • SAU wasted no time in the second half as it pushed the lead to 24 within the first five minutes on a nice finish in the paint from guard Paul Marandet.
  • The Cougars led by as many as 42 before the night was over. Senior guard Isaac Love drilled a three to ensure the 40-plus point victory with 17 seconds left as the visiting Cougars won going away 105-63.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The Cougars matched their longest win streak in more than two years when they started the 2014 season 6-0.
  • SAU had six players in double figures led by 16 from both Marendet and Drew Zuidema. Hogans and Medendorp both helped out with 14 apiece as Tommy Hamilton and Kyle Bartholomew contributed with 10.
  • Spring Arbor dominated the glass 51-30 and punished GLCC down low outscoring the Lakes 58-28 in the paint.

 
 

FOR THE LAKES

  • GLCC remains winless on the season as it struggled to get any offense going. The Lakes were held to 29 percent shooting in the first half and 33 percent (25-for-75) for the game.
  • The Lakes were led by Amari Jones and Tishaun Cooper, who both had 16 on the night. Romondo Ray finished with 12 points and 13 boards on the night.
  • Great Lakes Christian won the turnover battle forcing 22 Cougars giveaways.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will stay on the road as they head to Olivet College (2-4) on Saturday, Dec. 17 for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
