THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 90, Olivet 61

LOCATION: Cutler Event Center | Olivet, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 9-5, Olivet 2-6

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Olivet was red-hot from the floor early, making four of its first six shots – all three-pointers – to grab a quick 12-5 lead.
  • Spring Arbor trailed by as many as six in the first half, but used its top-ranked defense to claw its way back. Trailing 20-14 midway through the period, the Cougars went on a 20-2 run while holding the Comets to just one field goal over a seven minute span. Zach Medendorp sparked things with four quick points while back-to-back triples from Drew Zuidema and Caleb Hogans punctuated the scoring spurt.
  • The Comets made a push before the half ended, however, using the three-point shot to narrow the deficit to 10, 41-31, at the break.
  • In the second half, three-pointers from Hogans and Tommy Hamilton pushed the advantage to 52-34 at the 15:25 mark. However, a quick run by Olivet trimmed SAU's lead to seven, 54-47, with 13:02 remaining.
  • Spring Arbor responded immediately though with another three from Hamilton and a bucket from Paul Maradet. The Cougars would then hold the Comets scoreless again for more than eight minutes as they stretched their lead and cruised to their fifth straight victory.
  • In addition to his game-high 26 points, Hogans hauled in six rebounds while Medendorp had eight boards, three assists and three steals to go along with his 20 points.
  • Hamilton also finished in double figure scoring with 16 points. Zuidema followed with eight and Thomas Starks and Jeff Beckman chipped in six points apiece.
  • Spring Arbor shot over 50 percent for the fourth straight game, knocking down 57 percent (33-for-58) of its field goal attempts. With their 11 three-pointers, the Cougars also made double-digit three's for the fourth time in the last five games.
  • Olivet was limited to 38 percent (23-for-61) shooting, but did connect on 14 three-pointers.
  • The Cougars dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Comets 39-26.

FOR THE COMETS

  • Eric Ewing finished with 17 points and five rebounds to lead Olivet. Aaron Washington followed with 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting from long range.
  • The Comets made just three trips to the charity stripe on the afternoon, and converted on only one attempt.
  • The loss was the fifth straight for Olivet.
