FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 44, Carroll 65

LOCATION: Fultz Memorial Gymnasium | Phoenix, Ariz.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 8-7, Carroll 10-3

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Carroll, which entered the contest ranked No. 25 in NAIA Division I, started red-hot hitting five of its first seven shots to race out to a 10-2 lead less than three minutes into the game.
  • Spring Arbor responded with a 9-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Rachel Nelson, to get within one. The Cougars would trail by just three, 16-13, after the first quarter.
  • After falling behind by five early in the second period, six straight points from Kylie Townsley would give SAU its first lead of the afternoon, 21-20, at the 6:00 mark.
  • The two teams continued to battle back and forth with a three-pointer from Konkel at the 2:13 mark giving the Cougars a 27-26 advantage. The three by Konkel tied the program's record for career three-pointers made.
  • The Fighting Saints closed out the quarter on a 7-1 run, however, to take a 33-28 lead into halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Carroll began to pull away, opening the stanza with seven consecutive points to expand the lead to double digits. The Cougars would get back within eight midway through the quarter, but that was as close they would get.
  • Carroll shot 48 percent (28-for-58) from the field while limiting Spring Arbor to 28 percent (13-for-47). The Fighting Saints also out-rebounded the Cougars 45-20.
  • Townsley and Nelson led the way for SAU. Townsley finished with 15 points and five rebounds while Nelson totaled 11 points and three boards. Karly Bender and Konkel followed with six points apiece.

VS. MOUNT MARTY

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 63, Mount Marty 56

LOCATION: Fultz Memorial Gymnasium | Phoenix, Ariz.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 9-7, Mount Marty 8-8

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor showed its resiliency on the second day of the tournament. The Cougars not only bounced back from the previous day's setback, but rallied back to defeat Mount Marty after trailing for three quarters.
  • After falling behind 3-0 to start the contest, the Cougars answered with five straight points, including a record-setting three-pointer from Konkel. With the basket, Konkel eclipsed SAU's old all-time mark of 195 career three's held by Liz Chriscinske (1992-96).
  • A basket from Ryan Laier in the final minute would give the Cougars an 11-10 advantage after the first quarter.
  • Mount Marty started the second quarter with a 7-0 run, and would maintain the lead throughout most of the period. The Lancers closed the stanza with another lengthy run to grab a 32-24 edge heading into the intermission.
  • The Cougars battled back in the third quarter, but the Lancers refused to surrender their lead. Spring Arbor trimmed the deficit to two midway through the period, but Mount Marty pushed its lead back to eight, 45-37, at the 2:23 mark. However, Townsley poured in seven unanswered points for the Cougars in the final two minutes to get SAU back within two heading into the final 10 minutes.
  • In the fourth quarter, Townsley picked up where she left off hitting a jumper in the opening minute to even the score at 46-46. Moments later, Nelson buried a triple to put SAU on top for the first time since midway through the second quarter.
  • After a back and forth battle, a layup from Rachel Driesenga at the 2:31 mark gave SAU the lead for good. Back-to-back buckets from Bender and Konkel pushed the lead to five, 59-54, and the Cougars would go a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
  • Spring Arbor connected on 35 percent (25-for-71) of its attempts from the field compared to Mount Marty's 34 percent (19-for-56). The Cougars also held a 44-40 edge on the glass.
  • Townsley paced SAU with 19 points, six rebounds and five steals. Driesenga added 11 points and eight boards while Konkel chipped in nine points off the bench.
