HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Senior Kylie Townsley started red-hot scoring nine first quarter points on 4-for-6 shooting. However, Mount Vernon Nazarene came charging out of the gate as well, connecting on 60 percent of its field goal attempts to take a 21-20 lead after the first period.
  • The two teams continued to go back and forth in the second quarter, exchanging the lead four different times. MVNU held a two point advantage in the final minute, but a bucket from Kaitlyn Shields tied the score at 34-34 heading into halftime.
  • Midway through the third quarter, the home team used a 7-0 run to open things up. MVNU maintained its advantage into the fourth and would eventually lead by as many as 12, 66-54, with 2:04 left on the clock.
  • Still trailing by 10 with 33 seconds remaining, Spring Arbor went on an 8-1 run, capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Karly Bender, to trim the deficit to three, 71-68. The Cougars had a shot at the buzzer to tie the game, but a three-point attempt by Rachel Nelson came up empty.
  • Townsley finished with a game-high 21 points and four assists while Autumn Goggin followed with 20 points and six rebounds. Nelson also scored in double figures with 14 points and hauled in eight boards.
  • Spring Arbor shot 46 percent for the game while Mount Vernon Nazarene finished shooting 44 percent from the floor. The Cougars also held a 31-29 edge in rebounding.
