Marandet's career-high leads SAU past Purdue Northwest

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 62, Pudue Northwest 53

LOCATION: Dworkin Center | Westville, Ind.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 10-6, Purdue Northwest 6-10

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Purdue Northwest jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, but Spring Arbor came storming back with a 12-3 run to take the lead. Following a pair of free throws from Marandet, Zach Medendorp ignited the scoring spurt with back-to-back buckets, including a thunderous dunk. A layup from Xavier Prather trimmed the deficit to one and Marandet capped the run with two straight baskets to put the Cougars on top 16-13 at the 8:32 mark.
  • The home team regained the lead with a quick 4-0 run, but SAU's nationally ranked defense would put the clamps down on the Pride, holding them to just two field goals over the final eight minutes of the half.
  • Meanwhile, the Cougars would ride the hot-handed Marandet to carry a 31-21 lead into the break. The Warsaw, Indiana native scored seven points as part of a 15-4 run to close out the period.
  • Spring Arbor led by as many as nine in the second half, but Purdue Northwest would claw its way back into the game. A 7-0 run by the Pride gave the home squad a 41-40 advantage midway through the half.
  • The Cougars answered though getting consecutive buckets from Medendorp and would never trail again.
  • Purdue Northwest got within five, 58-53, with just over a minute to play, but SAU get free throws from Prather and Drew Zuidema to seal the win.

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Marandet went 7-for-10 from the floor and 10-for-12 from the free throw line to reach 25 points. He also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Medendorp followed with 13 points, six boards and three blocks while Jeff Beckman, making his first career start, added nine points.
  • Spring Arbor finished the afternoon shooting 46 percent (22-for-48) from the field, but just 1-for-13 from three-point range.
