Cougars' defense shines in league battle with Goshen

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team jumped back into Crossroads League play on Tuesday night as they played host of the Maple Leafs of Goshen College. The Cougars' nationally ranked defense proved to be too much for the visitors as they were held to a season-low 59 points. It was a great way to get back into league play, as the 80-59 win over the Maple Leafs pushed SAU's league record to 3-2.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 11-6 (3-2 CL), Goshen 9-8 (2-3 CL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor jumped out to an early lead as freshman guard Paul Marandet still had the hot hand coming off his career-high 25 points in the previous contest nailing a three-pointer.
  • The two teams would trade buckets early before the Cougars would push their lead to nine, 17-8 at the 11:52 mark as senior guard Drew Zuidema knocked down a triple to cap a 7-0 run.
  • Goshen cut the lead to four with 3:30 left in the first half and then Xavier Prather skied for a thunderous put-back slam sparking a 9-2 run to the end the half for the home team. The Cougars led 38-27 at the break.
  • SAU stretched its lead to 15 early in the half as Tommy Hamilton hit his first triple of the game.
  • Goshen would cut the lead to nine, 42-51 on a nice move down low from Kevin Phillips, but nine would be the closest the Leafs got the rest of the night.
  • Spring Arbor would respond with an 8-0 run as Caleb Hogans finished a fast break layup pushing the lead to 17, 59-42.
  • The Cougars nationally ranked defense would put the clamps on Goshen for the remainder of the night.
