LOCATION: Ariel Arena | Mount Vernon, Ohio

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 6-5 (2-2 CL), Mount Vernon Nazarene 9-3 (2-2 CL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor came out red-hot opening the game on a 10-0 run before Mount Vernon Nazarene stopped the bleeding. MVNU trimmed the deficit to four with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, but SAU answered with a 14-3 run behind the hot hand of Drew Zuidema, who knocked down a pair of triples during the run.
  • Zuidema was not done as he hit a huge three-pointer at the end of the half to extend the Cougars' lead to 49-33 at the break.
  • Mount Vernon Nazarene would not go away easy as it opened the second half on a 13-4 run led by Josh Ashwill, who turned SAU over in the back court and buried a three to cut the lead to five, 53-48, at the 14:25 mak.
  • But, that was as close as the home team would get in the second half. Spring Arbor responded with a 30-8 run sparked by their defense, which forced three turnovers in a minute allowing the offense to blow it open.
  • The visitors pushed the lead to as much as 25 before hanging on to win 87-67.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • In his 18th season as a head coach, all at Spring Arbor, Cottingham secured his 300th career victory. His career record is 300-280, and currently ranks 20th on the NAIA's list of winningest active coaches.
  • SAU dominated in down low, outscoring Mount Vernon Nazarene 40-20 in the paint.
  • Spring Arbor's nationally touted defense showed up for the second game in a row forcing 15 turnovers, which led to 19 points.
  • Paul Marandet led the Cougars offense with a season-high 19 points and was helped out by sophomore guard Tommy Hamilton's career-best 18 points. SAU had two others in double figures as Xavier Prather and Zuidema dropped 13 and 12, respectively.

FOR MOUNT VERNON NAZARENE

  • MVNU had three in double figures as Brett Vipperman and Trey McBride had 18 and 17 points apiece. Joey Schmitz ended the night with 12.
  • The Cougars struggled with SAU's length all night as they were out-rebounded 32-28 and were minus-20 on points in the paint.
  • MVNU, one of the league's top scoring and shooting teams, was held to just 39 percent shooting on the night as the visitors put the clamps down defensively
