Women's Soccer blanks Aquinas in season opener

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team started the 2016 season off on the right foot with a commanding 3-0 victory over Aquinas College on Wednesday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 3, Aquinas 0

LOCATION: Cougar Soccer Complex – Spring Arbor, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 1-0-0, Aquinas 0-1-0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor applied the pressure early on, but the strong defensive play of Aquinas kept the Cougars off the board for much of the first half.
  • Senior Corrie Good registered the first goal of the season for SAU with her tally in the 38th minute. Sophomore Bethany Balcer knifed her way through a pair of defenders inside the 18-yard box before dishing to Good who finished into a wide open net.
  • That was how the score stayed until the 78th minute when freshman Morgan Marshall notched the first goal of her collegiate career. After taking a pass from sophomore Lauren Orr at the top of the 18, Marshall put a spin move on her defender and fired a shot. The Aquinas goalkeeper got a piece of the attempt, but not enough to keep the ball out of the goal.
  • Balcer capped the scoring moments later when she ripped a shot from 25 yards out that went through the keeper's hands and into the back of the net.
  • Spring Arbor outshot Aquinas 24-5 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Allison Keizer stopped all four shots she faced to earn the first shutout of her career.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The victory stretched SAU's winning streak to 20 consecutive matches dating back to last season.
  • Tonight's clean sheet also extended the team's shutout streak. The Cougars have not surrendered a goal in over 1,000 minutes of action.
  • The Cougars improved to 6-0 against Aquinas since 2005.

FOR THE FOES

  • Madi Grit registered a team-high two shots for the Saints, putting both attempts on goal.
  • Isabella Buck had five saves in goal for Aquinas.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JASON CRIST

  • "Every season has a starting point, and this was decent beginning for us. We did some things well but we struggled to solve problems in parts of the match. Full credit to Aquinas as they were very organized, played hard and defended well."
  • "We need to do a better job of breaking down defenses that are low pressure and put numbers behind the ball. We have the personnel to solve those issues on the field, we just must be better at identifying what the game is giving us and making the adjustments necessary inside the game to exploit our opponents."
  • "This is a very talented group and I know that as we get on the same page we will become better at adjusting our tactics inside the match."
  • "I felt like Jacquelyn Martin played very well in the back and that our young wingers, Morgan Marshall and Kaley Buck also added a nice spark to our attack tonight."
