SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team opened the season by splitting a pair of matches at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Early Bird Tournament on Friday. The Cougars lost a hard-fought, five set bout to Lawrence Tech University, but bounced back to defeat Michigan-Dearborn 3-1.
MATCH 1
FINAL SCORE: Lawrence Tech def. Spring Arbor 3-2 (25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 17-15)

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After dropping the first two sets, Spring Arbor battled back winning sets three and four to force a decisive fifth set. However, the Blue Devils would edge out the Cougars 17-15 to earn their first win of the season.
- Senior Rebekah Kujat finished with 19 kills while freshman Alyssa Walker collected eight in her collegiate debut. Setters Annica Stotz and Kasey Follis guided the offense, combining for 21 assists. Juniors Leah Rose and Olivia Landis registered five aces apiece.
- Rose also led the team with 16 digs followed by Stotz with eight and senior Taylor Johnston with seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Michigan-Dearborn jumped out to an early lead after grabbing the first set, but SAU evened things up by winning set two.
- The Cougars would cruise past the Wolverines in the third set before closing out the match in set four.
- Kujat and Walker paced the attack again with 16 and nine kills, respectively. Stotz handed out 20 assists while Follis chipped in 13.
- Spring Arbor finished with 14 aces in the match, including a career-high 10 from Rose.
- Rose and Follis both recorded double-doubles. In addition to her 10 aces, Rose also picked up 26 digs, and Follis had 12 digs to go along with her 13 assists.

Spring Arbor is right back in action tomorrow, closing out the tournament with matches against Trinity International University and No. 17 Madonna University. Both matches will be played at Madonna.
