Women's Soccer wins league opener in dominant fashion

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 1 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team posted its first Crossroads League victory of the season in dominant fashion by handing the University of Saint Francis an 8-0 loss on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor applied intense pressure early, registering nine shots in the first 20 minutes, but was unable to get one past the Saint Francis defense.
  • Aubrey Schierbeek got the scoring started for the Cougars in the 23rd minute with an assist from Corrie Good.
  • Morgan Marshall and Bethany Balcer would also find the back of the net before the end of the first period to give SAU a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
  • In the second half, Spring Arbor erupted for five goals, including three in the first 11 minutes of the period. Abbey Fuller tallied a pair of goals while Kelly Hoffius netted her first marker of the season.
  • Goals from Katie Carroll and Renee Broekhuizen rounded out the scoring for the Cougars.
  • Ashley Timmons and Allison Keizer combined to record SAU's seventh shutout of the campaign.
  • The Cougars held a 31-3 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The eight goals scored were the most in a single game since the Cougars recorded nine against Bethel College on Oct. 10, 2015.
  • Seven different players scored in the contest for Spring Arbor.
  • The win pushed SAU's winning streak to 27.
  • Balcer and Schierbeek have each recorded a point (goal or assist) in five consecutive matches.

  • Nicole Stephan registered the only shot on goal for Saint Francis.
