Women's Basketball falls to nationally ranked IWU

MARION, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team looked to hand No. 12 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University its third straight setback on Saturday, but the Wildcats were clutch from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off the Cougars 58-51.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The No. 12 ranked Wildcats started red-hot hitting five of its first six shots to grab an early 11-2 lead.
  • Three-pointers from Autumn Goggin and Aimee Konkel helped close the gap, and Kylie Townsley hit a layup in the final minute to get within five, 16-11, heading into the second quarter.
  • The Cougars scored the first five points of the second period to even the score. A pair of free throws from Townsley made it a three point game before Rachel Nelson buried a triple to knot things up at 16-16 at the 8:35 mark.
  • The two teams traded baskets over the next five minutes, but the home team would hold SAU scoreless over the final 4:20 of the quarter as the Wildcats grabbed a 27-19 advantage heading into the locker room.
  • Indiana Wesleyan had trouble against Spring Arbor's high-pressure defense to start the third quarter. The Cougars forced three quick turnovers and capitalized with baskets from Rachel Driesenga, Karly Bender and Townsley to trim the deficit two, 27-25.
  • IWU responded, however, with a 12-4 run and looked to be in control.
  • Spring Arbor trailed by nine, 51-42, with 3:30 to play in the fourth quarter but a 6-2 scoring spurt, led by Townsley and Goggin, helped the Cougars get within five at the 1:32 mark. Indiana Wesleyan answered a key bucket on the next possession and would seal the game in the final minute at the charity stripe.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Townsley finished with 19 points, including nine in the final quarter, to lead SAU. She also contributed four steals and two rebounds.
  • Goggin followed with 12 points while Nelson added seven to go along with four rebounds. Driesenga had four points and a team-high six boards.
  • Spring Arbor shot 34 percent (18-for-53) on the afternoon.
  • The Cougars forced IWU into 20 turnovers and turned those giveaways into 19 points.

 
 

FOR THE WILDCATS

  • Three players scored in double figures for Indiana Wesleyan, including Kelsey Key, who finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Chelsea Winner added 17 points and Anna Imhoff chipped in 10.
  • The Wildcats hit 43 percent (20-for-47) of its shots and were 16-for-21 from the free throw line.
  • IWU also held a 38-28 advantage on the glass.

 
 

UP NEXT

The Cougars will visit Taylor University (9-13, 4-6 CL) on Wednesday, Jan. 25 before returning home to host Huntington University (10-11, 4-6 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
