HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team dropped a Crossroads League matchup Saturday afternoon against nationally ranked Huntington University, 82-67.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 67, #25 Huntington 82

LOCATION: Platt Arena | Huntington, Ind.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 9-9 (0-6 CL), Huntington 9-8 (3-3 CL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A couple of early baskets from Rachel Driesenga helped Spring Arbor pull ahead 10-2 in the first quarter. The Cougar defense stymied the league's top scoring team early on limiting them to 1-for-9 from the field in the first seven minutes of action.
  • Spring Arbor extended its lead to 15-4 following a three-pointer from Aimee Konkel. However, the Foresters began to find their rhythm over the final two minutes of the period, hitting five consecutive shots to even the score. Konkel would bury a triple just before the horn though to give SAU an 18-15 lead heading to the second quarter.
  • Huntington carried over its late-quarter momentum into the second stanza as the home team opened on an 8-0 run. With the Foresters leading 25-24 at the 6:16 mark, the home team would use another lengthy run to take a 45-28 advantage into halftime. HU was red-hot from the field, connecting on 9-of-15 attempts in the period. The Foresters would also pick up the intensity on the defensive end, forcing SAU into 11 turnovers in the quarter.
  • The nationally ranked Foresters continued to stretch their lead in the third quarter en route to their third league win.

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Konkel finished with a season-high 21 points to lead Spring Arbor. She went 7-for-13 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from three-point range.
  • Kylie Townsley followed with 12 points and four rebounds and Rachel Nelson added nine points and five boards. Driesenga and Autumn Goggin chipped in eight points apiece while Driesenga also hauled in six rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor shot 44 percent (24-for-54) on the afternoon, but its league-leading defense was unable to slow down Huntington, which shot 51 percent (29-for-57) and hit 11 three-pointers.

FOR THE FORESTERS

  • Four different Foresters reached double figure scoring, including Miranda Palmer, who poured in 18 points. Allyson Trout followed with 17 while Hailey Krewald and Maddie Richer chipped in 14 and 10, respectively.
  • Huntington matched Spring Arbor on the glass, bringing down 30 boards each, but HU forced SAU into 22 turnovers, which the home team converted into 24 points.
