SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team survived a five-set thriller with Bethel College in the final home match of the 2017 regular season to send four seniors off on a high note.
Prior to the match, the Cougars honored seniors Leah Rose, Olivia Landis, Courtney Kyser and Gabrielle Hilliard for their four years as part of the program.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- SET SCORES: 25-15, 25-23, 19-25, 14-25, 18-16
- Spring Arbor came out strong, hitting .324 as a team in the first set. The Cougars never trailed on their way to claiming the opening frame.
- The momentum stayed with SAU in the second set as, again, the Cougars hit at a .333 clip to edge the Pilots 25-23 and take a two-sets-to-none lead.
- Bethel avoided the sweep with a win in the third set, and cruised in set four to even the match at 2-2.
- A pair of kills from Courtney Kyser in the early stages of the fifth set fueled a 4-0 run, helping SAU grab a 6-2 advantage. However, the Pilots came storming back and built a 14-11 advantage. Spring Arbor fought off three match points to force extra points before a kill from Paige Porter and two BC errors sealed the win for the Cougars.
- Alyssa Walker led the way with a career-high 17 kills followed by Kyser with 14. Kasey Follis added 13 kills while hitting at a .440 clip. Landis also chipped in seven kills.
- Setter Annica Stotz also recorded a career-best with 50 assists.
- Freshman libero Stephaney Fifield anchored the defense with 20 digs. Three other Cougars recorded double digit digs, including Rose with 16, Mackay Heasley with 14 and Porter with 10. Kyser tallied a team-high five blocks.
FOR THE PILOTS
- Haley Brown and Kassandra Williams paced Bethel with 16 and 13 kills.
- Payton Anderson dished out 30 assists.
- Erin Carlos had a match-high 23 digs.
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor will close out the regular season with three straight road matches beginning with a trip to No. 25 Marian University (23-4, 13-2 CL) on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
