WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Autumn Goggin had a hot hand on Saturday afternoon in the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center as the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team defeated Grace College 67-58. Goggin hit four three-point shots on her way to scoring 24 points, which matched her season-high, as the Cougars spoiled the Lancers' Senior Day.
The game began with both teams battling back and forth, which set the tone for the rest of the game. Senior Rachel Driesenga's 10 first quarter points allowed the Cougars to finish the first with an 18-16 lead.
Grace (14-14, 9-7 CL) seemed determined to gain the lead in the second quarter, yet Goggin hit a three within the first minute to undermine their effort. Though they were outrebounded, the Cougars' defensive pressure forced the Lancers to 10 first half turnovers. They ran into the locker room up by two at the half, 35-33.
In the third quarter, Grace jumped out with a bucket, yet the Cougars matched the momentum, and continued to slowly pull away. Contributions from Goggin, Rachel Nelson, Ryann Laier and Kylie Townsley pushed SAU to a 53-42 lead.
The panic of the Lancers was felt across the gym in the fourth quarter as play started to get aggressive, and they went on a 6-0 run to put themselves within a five point margin with seven and a half minutes to go. However, the Cougars never let the Lancers in. Cougars hit 90 percent from the free throw line in the final four minutes of play to seal the game.
Overall, the Cougars played a very solid game of team basketball. Goggin led the team with 24 points and four assists. Townsley finished with 17 points and eight rebounds. Driesenga added a season-high 15 points, while Nelson dropped seven. Karly Bender and Aimee Konkel both recorded three assists.
Spring Arbor (13-15, 4-12 CL) will look to continue the momentum at Goshen College (13-15, 7-9 CL) on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., and host Indiana Wesleyan University (17-11, 10-6 CL) on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. to finish the season.
