Men's Basketball bounces back with road win against Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. – After a heartbreaking loss against Grace College Saturday, the Spring Arbor University men's basketball team refocused for an 88-81 win over Goshen College at the Gunden Gym in Goshen, Indiana on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a steady start to the game, both teams battled back and forth. Ten minutes in, the Maple Leafs stretched the lead to 24-18 with field goals from Billy Geschke, Conner Funkhouser and Kevin Phillips.
  • Drew Zuidema quickly responded with a jumper in the paint and a three-pointer halting the Maple Leaf's momentum.
  • The Cougars fought back to end the half with Xavier Prather hitting a jumper with 48 seconds on the clock to go ahead 47-41. However, Goshen's Devin Heath-Granger put up a second chance shot with two seconds left to end the half 47-43.
  • Spring Arbor found its footing and came out of the locker room with energy and focus as they went up 52-47 after free throws from Caleb Hogans with 18:17 left in the second half.
  • A three-pointer by Thomas Starks, assisted by Drew Zuidema, pushed the Cougars ahead by seven, 59-52, with 15:16 left forcing Goshen to call a timeout.
  • A couple of Maple Leaf turnovers and back-to-back missed field goals helped the Cougars climb to a 12 point lead. Xavier Prather capped the 14-4 run with a three-pointer to put SAU ahead 68-56 with 12:01 left in the half.
  • Three-pointers from Hogans and Paul Marandet gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night at 19 points, 83-64, with 5:38 remaining.
  • The Maple Leafs refused to give up with 11 unanswered points over the final two minutes, but the Cougars' large second half lead helped them hold off the late charge from the home team.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Zach Mendendorp led the Cougars with 19 points while Zuidema knocked down five three-pointers on his way to 17 points. Marandet finished with 11 points and Starks added 10 to go along with seven assists, which matched his career-high.
  • Spring Arbor shot 69 percent (20-for-29) from the field in the first half and finished the game shooting at a 58 percent (35-for-60) clip. The Cougars drained 10 three-pointers going 10-for-21 from long range.

 
 

FOR THE MAPLE LEAFS

  • Heath-Granger paced the Maple Leafs with 16 points and handed out six assists. Kevin Phillips and Xavier Newson also finished in double figure scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Goshen was red-hot from the field in the first half connecting on 75 percent (18-for-24) of its field goal attempts. However, Spring Arbor limited the Maple Leafs to just 37 percent (14-for-38) shooting over the final 20 minutes. The Maple Leafs shot an impressive 92 percent (12-for-13) from the free-throw line.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor returns home to host No. 9 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University (23-6, 13-4 CL) at 3 p.m. to finish out the regular season. The Crossroads League Tournament is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The Cougars are currently fifth in the league standings.
