DEARBORN, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at the Early Bird Challenge, hosted by the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Cougars suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 20 Madonna University before capturing a 3-0 win over Point Park University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Madonna never trailed in the opening set. The Crusaders jumped out to a 4-1 lead and maintained a comfortable cushion before closing out the frame on a 5-0 run.
- In the second set, kills from Sydney Ritz, Alison Ford and Claudia Ellis helped stake the Cougars to an early 6-3 advantage. SAU led by as many as five in the set, 15-10, before Madonna rallied back to claim the set.
- Spring Arbor had the upper hand early again in the third set until a 4-0 run gave MU its first lead. The Cougars went toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked Crusaders the rest of the way, but Madonna was able to hang to secure the match win.
- Macey Rupp and Ritz had eight kills apiece to lead Spring Arbor while Alyssa Walker added four. Annica Stotz and Hope Notter combined for 23 assists.
- Sophomore libero Stephaney Fifield picked up a match-high 12 digs. Ritz and Ellis were credited with three blocks each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor showed its resiliency, bouncing back from its first loss of the season to take down Point Park in straight sets.
- Trailing 19-18 in the first set, the Cougars scored the final seven points, capped by a kill from Kasey Follis, to capture the opening frame.
- That momentum carried into the second set as SAU raced out to a 7-1 advantage and never looked back.
- A big run early in the third set put the Cougars in command en route to the sweep.
- Ellis and Ford recorded eight kills apiece to lead the attack while Kyara Black and Ritz chipped in five each. Notter handed out 14 assists and Stotz finished with 12.
- Defensively, Fifield had 10 digs and Notter collected eight. Ellis ended the night with three blocks while Black and Rupp had two each.
- Spring Arbor hit .299 in the match, including .321 in the second set and an impressive .478 in the third.
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor will return for day two of the Early Bird Challenge on Saturday. The Cougars are set to play Michigan-Dearborn (1-1) at 10 a.m. and Lawrence Tech (2-0) at 2 p.m.
