DEARBORN, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team improved its overall record to 5-1 with wins over the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Lawrence Tech on the final day of action at the UM-Dearborn Early Bird Challenge on Saturday.
The Cougars' 5-1 start is program's best record to kick off a season since the 2009 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor earned its fourth three-set victory of the season with its sweep of Michigan-Dearborn to kick off play at the Early Bird Challenge Saturday.
- The Wolverines would take the first point of the match, but an SAU 4-0 run, led by two kills from Sydney Ritz, would give the Cougars the lead for good in the first set.
- The second set was back-and-forth the entire way. Following a kill by Kyara Black and an ace from Alison Ford, the Cougars led 23-19. However, Michigan-Dearborn rallied back to score six of the next seven points. Spring Arbor fought off set-point once before kills from Ritz and Macey Rupp clinched the set for SAU.
- In the third set, Spring Arbor held a slim 16-14 lead midway through, but the Cougars tallied seven of the next eight points en route to the victory.
- Ritz and Rupp recorded double-digit kills with 10 each while Ford added seven. Hope Notter handed out a season-best 20 assists and Annica Stotz finished with 10.
- Black was a force at the net with five blocks while Kasey Follis, Claudia Ellis and Ritz each recorded three. Stephaney Fifield posted a match-high 16 digs.
- Spring Arbor held the Wolverines to just a .018 hitting percentage on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lawrence Tech claimed the first set, but Spring Arbor was unshaken, bouncing back to win each of the next three to capture their fifth win on the season.
- The Blue Devils looked to pull even in the fourth set leading 23-22. However, the Cougars responded with three consecutive kills from Follis, Ford and Black to crush any hopes of an LTU comeback.
- Ritz had a season-high 14 kills to pace SAU with Ford and Rupp right behind with 12 and 11, respectively. Notter and Stotz dished out nine assists apiece.
- Fifield finished with a season-best 26 digs. Ford had 15 digs to register her first double-double. Black added four of the Cougars' eight blocks.

Spring Arbor will open Crossroads League play when it travels to the defending league champions and No. 22 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University (0-4) on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
