Volleyball picks up two wins on Day 1 of SHU Invitational

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team got play in the Siena Heights University Invitational off to a good start with a pair of wins against Robert Morris University and Calumet College of St. Joseph on Friday.

The Cougars defeated Robert Morris in a hard-fought five set match (22-25, 25-8, 25-10, 19-25, 15-11) before topping Calumet St. Joseph in three straight sets (25-8, 25-12, 25-16).

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sydney Ritz paced Spring Arbor with a career-high 19 kills and a .643 hitting percentage. Macey Rupp followed with 10 kills and Maggie Watson finished with eight.
  • Three Cougars recorded double-digit assists. Annica Stotz posted a season-best 18 while Hope Notter had 14 and Stephaney Fifield had 11.
  • Notter and Fifield both finished with double-doubles. Notter added 12 digs to go along with her 14 assists while Fifield racked up 16 digs with her 11 helpers. The duo also combined for 11 service aces with Fifield registering six and Notter five.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spring Arbor hit .398 in the match – the best hitting percentage in a match since the 2011 season – with 48 kills to just nine attack errors. Alyssa Walker had 11 kills to lead the way with Claudia Ellis and Ritz following with nine apiece.
  • Notter orchestrated the offense with 17 assists and added three more aces.
  • Fifield picked up nine digs and Walker finished with seven. Ellis recorded three blocks.
  • The Cougars limited Calumet St. Joseph to just a .013 hitting percentage.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor will return for day two of the SHU Invitational on Saturday. The Cougars are set to play Siena Heights (3-0) at 9 a.m. and the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) (2-5) at 11 a.m.
