HELENA, Mont. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team opened the 2023 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Big Sky Challenge, hosted by Carroll College, on Friday.
The Cougars began the day with a sweep of Warner Pacific (Ore.) before dropping a close three-set match to Bushnell (Ore.).
VS. WARNER PACIFIC
FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 3, Warner Pacific 0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-18)

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor opened its season with a dominant win over Warner Pacific. The Cougars hit .301 over three sets while limiting WPU to a -.013 hitting percentage. SAU registered 35 kills to Warner Pacific's 19 and racked up 13 aces.
- Kendall Bollenbacher recorded a match-best 13 kills and Kelsie Lilly followed with eight. Freshman Keely Hinzman had four kills while hitting at a .571 clip while Abigail Fernihough finished with four kills on four swings.
- Setters Hayden Fortress and Camy Wedge combined for 31 assists. Fortress tallied 19 and Wedge handed out 12 in her collegiate debut.
- Frances Churchwell picked up a team-high 12 digs and added four aces.
VS. BUSHNELL

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
- Spring Arbor went toe-to-toe with Bushnell – a team that boasted a 20-12 record in 2022 – in the second match of the day with the first two sets each decided by two points. However, the Beacons were able to eke out the win and deal SAU its first loss of the campaign.
- Bollenbacher had double digit kills to lead the way for the Cougars finishing the match with 10. Mikenna Kwiatkowski came away with six and Lilly notched five.
- Fortress recorded 17 assists and Wedge added 11 while serving up two aces.
- On the defensive end, Fernihough was a force at the net with five total blocks. Churchwell collected 12 digs and Abby Rissman finished with six.
