SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University has found the next leader of its men's basketball team, announcing the hiring of Mark DeLaney as the Cougars' new head coach.
DeLaney arrives at SAU with nearly two decades of coaching experience spanning NCAA Division II, NAIA and high school basketball, bringing a strong reputation for player development, recruiting success and Christ-centered leadership.
President Brent Ellis framed the hire as an expression of the university's foundational commitments. "At Spring Arbor, we are unapologetic about our commitment to Jesus Christ, while also serious about competing for championships. Mark DeLaney has spent his coaching career proving that the two belong together, and his arrival signals exactly what we expect of Cougar Athletics in this next chapter. I am grateful to
Ryan Marken and the search committee for their faithful work, and I welcome Mark and his family with great anticipation for what God will do through this program."
"We are elated to welcome Mark and his family to the Cougar community," said Interim Athletic Director
Ryan Marken. "A dedicated student of the game, Mark has studied under some of the most respected minds in the sport, and we are excited to bring his expertise and experience to our program. More importantly, beyond his professional accomplishments, Mark's deep love for Jesus, his family, and the discipleship of the young men in his program is truly inspiring. We are honored to have him join our community."
University Chief of Staff Corey Ross emphasized the significance of the program's culture and the leadership DeLaney brings to it.
"In addition to competitive strength, Cougar Basketball has a deep tradition of forming young men in faith and character, and we are grateful to everyone whose investment over the years has built that legacy. Mark steps into that tradition with the convictions and pedigree to carry it forward, and our current student-athletes have our full commitment as the program enters this next season."
Most recently, DeLaney served as an assistant coach at Ashland University, where he helped lead the Eagles to a 20-11 record and an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance during the 2025-26 season. During his tenure, Ashland also secured the No. 1 Division II recruiting class in Ohio while developing multiple All-GMAC performers.
Prior to Ashland, DeLaney spent time on the coaching staffs at Grace College, Northern State University and Cedarville University, working under several highly respected coaches, including Hall of Famer Jim Kessler at Grace and Don Meyer from Northern State University. While at Northern State, DeLaney helped guide the Wolves to a 29-4 record and an NCAA Division II Central Regional Final appearance.
DeLaney also owns a decade of high school coaching experience, earning district coach of the year honors twice while leading his teams to two conference championships.
"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve as the head men's basketball coach at Spring Arbor University," said DeLaney. "What makes this opportunity so special is being part of a Christ-centered community that is unapologetic about its faith in Jesus and committed to using athletics as a platform to impact lives for His glory.
DeLaney emphasized that building meaningful relationships and developing the whole student-athlete will be central pillars of the program moving forward.
"Our mission is to develop young men spiritually, academically and athletically," he added. "Helping them grow into servant leaders while competing at the highest level on the basketball court."
"I am thankful to President Brent Ellis, Athletic Director
Ryan Marken, and the entire search committee for their prayerful leadership and support throughout this process. I am honored for the opportunity to serve the student-athletes, the university, and the Kingdom through this program."
A 2006 graduate of Ashland University, DeLaney earned his bachelor's degree in physical education before completing his master's degree in physical education and health from Northern State University in 2009.
As a player, DeLaney was part of a 2002 Ohio Division III State Championship team at Clear Fork High School and was named the OHSAA Division III Tournament MVP.
DeLaney, his wife Kim and their three children, Addyson, Joslyn Raelyn, will officially begin leading the Cougar men's basketball program on June 1 ahead of the 2026-27 season.
