The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team extended their win streak to five games with a 5-0 drubbing of Huntington University on Wednesday.
Spring Arbor has outscored their past five opponents by a tally of 23-1 and have conceded just three conference goals this season..
Playing in very difficult conditions, the Cougars lost the coin flip at the beginning of the match and were forced to play the first forty five minutes into a 30 mph head wind. The strong tailwind gave the hosts the advantage of being able to relieve pressure from their defensive third and boot a long ball up field at any time.
After a short break in period, the Cougars settled down and began to build the play up on the ground, working the ball in and out of the middle third of the field and connecting with their forwards.
After a couple of near misses it was freshman
Karly Linton who got the scoring rolling for SAU. The 5'4 Midland, Michigan product took a diagonal service from senior
Kristin Abbott over the top of the Forester right defender and tapped the ball past HU goalkeeper Caitlyn Adams for her third game winning goal of the season. The marker was Linton's fifth overall this season.
Abbott gave SAU some breathing room just three minutes later when junior
Jalese DeBiasi found her with a short ball through the HU defense. Abbott slipped the ball past Adams to give SAU a 2-0 lead heading into the break. The tally was Abbott's team leading sixth of the year.
Playing with the wind at their backs in the second half SAU was able to go forward patiently and look for seams in the Forester defense.
Senior
Christina Riske made the game 3-0 in the 49th minute when she got on the end of a Linton service and side-footed the ball past Adams from 12 yards out. The goal was Riske's fifth of the season.
DeBiasi turned goalscorer in the 81st minute when she nodded a
Megan Wegener corner kick in. Wegener finished off the scoring for SAU when she slammed home the rebound after Linton smashed an eighteen yard effort off the crossbar in the 88th minute.
Spring Arbor outshot the Foresters 14-4 in the contest and held a 10-2 shots on goal advantage, as well as a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
"Any conference win on the road is a good one," commented SAU head coach
Jason Crist. "This win was especially meaningful for us, as Huntington has an up and coming program that has produced good conference results so far this season. We are starting to put the ball in the net consistently, and I think that the girls are figuring out that scoring goals is fun."
