The Spring Arbor University women's soccer team continued scoring goals
at a torrid pace today, breezing by the Trojans of Taylor University 6-1
in the semi-final round of the MCC post season tournament.
Senior forward
Kristin Abbott ruled the day, notching her first career hat-trick in the win.
Abbott wasted little time in getting things going as she got on the end of a
Maegan Smith cross and beat Taylor netminder Cori Sehr with a low ball to the side netting in the fourth minute of play. Abbott tacked on another ten minutes later when Smith and sophomore
Braydan Wiles combined before playing Abbott in behind the Trojan defense. Abbott hit a left footed missile past Sehr to the far post to make the score 2-0.
Smith would add a goal of her own in the 21st minute when she turned her defender and hit a sharp angled shot over the top of Sehr to the far upper 90. Emily Von Raesfeld kept the Trojans in it momentarily when she connected on a penalty kick which was awarded in the 40th minute after Spring Arbor was charged for a foul in the box. The two teams went into intermission with Spring Arbor leading 3-1.
The second half began right where the first frame left off, as
Jessica Clarke beat Sehr in the 54th minute off a nice feed from Smith.
Jenna Bigger got in on the action in the 72nd minute when she popped a short range shot over the top of Sehr to make the tally 5-1.
Abbott added a bookend to her opening goal by hooking up with Smith one more time and completing the hat trick int he 79th minute.
Spring Arbor moves to 16-4 on the season and will now face rival Indiana Wesleyan in the conference championship match for the right to advance to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. IWU advanced to the tournament final by beating Huntington University 3-0 in the other semi-final match today.
