MARION, IN - After two losses to Crossroads League opponents
this year, the Spring Arbor University men's tennis team was in a must win
match with League leading, and undefeated Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats. The Cougars stepped up to the challenge and
did what they had to do and left Marion, In with a 5-4 win.
Starting with double play, the Cougars picked up two of the three
flights with wins at #1 and #2 doubles.
Thomas Calderone and Aaron Mays defeated Kyle Johnson and Alex McMahan
8-5 and David Darling and Nathan Scholten outlasted leonard Mathews and Brandon
Dubuque 9-8 (1) in a tiebreaker.
Needing just to split the singles 3-3 with the Wildcats,
Spring Arbor picked up fairly quick wins at the #2 and #3 spots as David
Darling won 6-1, 6-3 at #2, and Aaron Mays dispatched his opponent 6-3, 6-2.
Nathan Scholten picked up a hard faught 7-5, 6-3 huge win
and deciding point for the Cougar victory.
Thomas Calderone lost his first League match at #1 singles
1-6, 6-3, 2-6.
The Cougars win improves their mark to 5-2 (4-2), and the
Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season and drops to 7-1, (6-1).
SAU will continue play tomorrow afternoon with a home match
with Saint Francis at 3:00. Saint
Francis is looking for their first win of the season as they sit at 0-9 (0-6).
