SPRING ARBOR, Mich - Every once in a while a coach is
presented with an opportunity to rest some players that need it and that was
the case on Tuesday afternoon as the Cougars hosted St. Francis men tennis
team. SAU still came away with a 9-0 win
and the strategy was carried out flawlessly.
Terry Darling sat out Thomas Calderone and Aaron Mayes and
move players around in the lineup and in the process, an interesting scenario developed.
David Darling returned to the #1 singles position, Nate
Scholten moved to #2 singles, Michael
Darling took the #3 spot, Matt Wojtkowski was at #4, Andrew Fitzpatrick stood
in the #5 spot and freshman Tony Mayotte made is collegiate debut at #6 singles.
What makes this interesting is not switching the lineup, but
that five of the six singles positions were all filled by local Jackson County
Western High School graduates.
Wojtkowski was the only non-Western grad in the singles lineup.
Spring Arbor swept the three doubles matches with David
Darling and Scholten at #1 doubles, John Hall and Jesse DeBoer at #2, and
Fitzpatrick and Wojtkowski at the #3 doubles spot.
All the singles matches went in straight sets except the #6
singles position where Tony Mayotte over came first set jitters and rebounded
winning his match 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Cougars improved to 6-2 on the year and 5-2 in the CL
with one match remaining before the post season tournament. Spring Arbor will take on Taylor on Thursday
afternoon in Upland with the match starting at 4:00.
