Lancers edge out Cougars for top spot in the conference

SPRING ARBOR, MI - In what could be considered an upset in the Crossroads League men's tennis conference, the Spring Arbor University Cougars were edged out 5-4 by Grace College in a hotly contested match on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars got all the wins on the top half of the lineup at one, two, and three singles, as well as the one doubles spot. But the guys came up just short on the bottom half, as the Lancers captured the four, five, and six singles, as well as the two and three doubles spots.

"Grace is a good team and they obviously worked very hard on their games over the summer," said Head Coach, Terry Darling. "We needed to get win in the key spots and we just weren't able to do that today."

Every match from top to bottom was a straight set match starting with Thomas Calderone winning at one singles 6-4, 6-3 over Daniel Sanchez. David Darling won handily at two singles 6-1, 6-3, and Aaron Mayes was the last man off the courts after a 7-6, 6-2 victory over an animated Nik Todorovic.

Nathan Scholten, Michael Darling, and Matt Wojtkowski were are close, but came up just short at four, five, and six singles, respectively.

Calderone and Mayes teamed up in an earlier one doubles match victory edging out Todorovic 8-5 for Spring Arbor's only win in doubles.

David Darling, and Nathan Scholten fell 8-6 in a rare doubles loss. Last year, the tandem was 17-1 in dual match play.

The loss drops the Cougars to 1-1 overall and in league play and will now need help to re-claim the Crossroads League Championship. Grace stays undefeated at 2-0 on the year.

The Cougars will play at home again on Saturday against Marian University. Marian is 2-1 with wins over Bethel (9-0) and Taylor (6-3) and a loss against Grace (3-6). The match is slated for 1:00 pm.
