The result might not have been what the players hoped for, but head coach Jason Crist was pleased with the progress his team showed Saturday in a 1-1 draw with Madonna University.
The Cougars scored first, on a short post, right footed laser off the foot of freshman Corrie Good. Good, who has been injured for the majority of the season up to this point, took a pass from Karly Linton, cut back on her defender and tallied her first career goal for the Cougars.
Spring Arbor was dominant in possession and every statistical category, but struggled with the final pass in many instances on the night. The Cougars coughed up a goal by Madonna's Ashley Parent against the run of play in a transition in the 55th minute and were unable to find the game winner in spite of some very good opportunities to make it happen throughout the second half.
The Cougars held a 26-11 advantage in shots and a 14-4 tally in shots on goal in the contest. SAU also owned a 7-0 bulge in corner kicks, but were out fouled 19-10 in a very physical match.
"We're growing up," commented Crist after the match. "It was evident to me tonight that we are turning the corner with our play, getting healthy in a couple key spots and that good things lie ahead for this team. Defensively we are getting more organized and from an attacking perspective this group has potential to be very special. We are getting on the same page and learning each other. I think back to our last match with Madonna in 2012 and I believe we were much more dominant tonight. We forced them to chase the game for most of the match. We would have liked a different result, but that's just soccer sometimes. We were very pleased with the level of play overall."
The Cougars (2-2-1) are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Concordia University in Ann Arbor for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
