Men's Tennis Defeats Saint Francis in Season Opener

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team not only had to battle the University of Saint Francis on Tuesday afternoon, but Mother Nature as well, fighting off multiple weather delays before eventually defeating USF 6-3.

The Cougars won four of the singles flights, including a victory by junior Jesse DeBoer at the No. 2 position. After dropping the first set, DeBoer rallied back to take the next two winning 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, while senior Andrew Herlein, junior Tony Mayotte and sophomore Jacob Byrd all prevailed in straight sets.

In doubles competition, senior Michael Darling and DeBoer lost a tight match to USF's top two players 9-8 (4), but the Cougars came out on top at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior John Hall and Mayotte edged out the pair of Tate Dishman and Payton Selking 9-7, while Herlein and senior Andrew Fitzpatrick cruised to an 8-2 victory.

Up next, the Cougars will visit Bethel College on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m.
