UPLAND, Ind. – After starting the season with back-to-back wins, the Spring Arbor University men's tennis team lost for the first time in 2014, dropping a 6-3 decision to Taylor University on Tuesday.
The loss drops SAU to 2-1 on the year while the Trojans earned their first win of the season, bumping their record to 1-3.
The Cougars came out on top in two doubles matches, edging the Trojans on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The pair of John Hall and Tony Mayotte, and Andrew Herlein and Andrew Fitzpatrick, both defeated their opponents by identical 8-6 scores. Taylor was able to avoid the sweep by knocking off the reigning Crossroads League Player of the Week Jesse DeBoer and Michael Darling 8-5 at the No. 1 position.
However, SAU didn't see the same success in singles competition. The Trojans claimed victory in five flights with Mayotte capturing the lone win for the Cougars at No. 4. Herlein and Jacob Byrd battled to a decisive third set in each of their matches, but, unfortunately, came up just short.
Spring Arbor will visit Goshen College on Thursday, Sept. 4. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
