SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Following back-to-back road losses, the Spring Arbor University men's tennis team looked to get back on track against first-place Grace College on Saturday.
The Lancers (4-0, 4-0 Crossroads League), who were one of three teams that shared the regular season conference crown last season, proved to be too much for the Cougars, defeating SAU 8-1.
The Cougars fell behind early after dropping two of the three doubles points. Seniors Andrew Herlein and Andrew Fitzpatrick helped SAU avoid the sweep by winning 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, Spring Arbor battled against some of the top players in the conference. However, Grace demonstrated why they are one of only two squads that are unbeaten in the conference, taking all six flights, and five in straight sets. At the No. 2 position, junior Jesse DeBoer won the opening set, but fell in the next before losing the tie-breaker.
The Cougars will face another tough test when they host Marian University (4-0, 4-0 Crossroads League) on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
