SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Junior Caleb Hogans poured in a career-high 25 points to lead the Spring Arbor University men's basketball team to a 100-81 win over Marygrove College in its home opener on Monday night.
The win evened Spring Arbor's record at 2-2 on the young season while Marygrove slipped to 0-2.
After falling behind Marygrove early, Hogans would guide Spring Arbor back scoring 19 of his 25 points in the first half. Trailing by five, 21-16, at the 12:25 mark, Hogans sparked a 9-0 run with five straight points, and the Cougars would never trail again.
Up 34-32 with 5:58 to play in the opening period, Hogans took over scoring nine of SAU's next 11 points to push the margin to double digits.
After taking a 47-34 advantage into halftime, Spring Arbor would open the second half with back-to-back buckets from sophomores Drew Zuidema and Zach Medendorp, and would never look back.
The Cougars shot 51 percent (38-for-75) from the field while limited the Mustangs to 43 percent (33-for-76), including a 9-for-30 mark from behind the arc. SAU held a slight edge in rebounds, hauling in 43 compared to the visitors' 40.
Four other Cougars joined Hogans in double figure scoring, including Zuidema who also posted and career-high with 15 points. Junior Thomas Starks posted 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to record his fifth career double-double. Medendorp added 11 points and nine rebounds while senior Peter Barry finished with 10 points.
"Solid team win," said head coach Ryan Cottingham. "I really like the way we shared the ball. I'm excited about our balance and our depth."
Spring Arbor will return to action when it hosts Great Lakes Christian College in the Trent Allen Memorial Challenge on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
