ALMA, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 6-3 win over Alma College on Friday at the Stone Recreation Center.
The Cougars grabbed a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles. Michael Darling and Jesse DeBoer won 8-3 at No. 1 and John Hall and Tony Mayotte pulled out a close 8-6 win on the No. 2 court. Andrew Herlein and Andrew Fitzpatrick completed the sweep after prevailing 8-4 at No. 3.
In singles action, DeBoer won in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 while Hall and Jacob Byrd each earned a hard-fought three set victory at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions. Hall defeated his opponent 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 and Byrd rallied back after dropping the first set 6-7, 6-4, 10-6.
Spring Arbor returns to action at Adrian College on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.
