HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Junior Tony Mayotte won a thrilling three-set match to close out a 5-4 victory for the Spring Arbor University men's tennis team over Lawrence Tech on Wednesday after the match had been suspended Monday night.
The Cougars claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to grab an early lead over the Blue Devils. Senior Michael Darling and junior Jesse DeBoer triumphed 8-3 while seniors Andrew Herlein and Andrew Fitzpatrick cruised to an 8-1 win.
Lawrence Tech (6-2) battled back though and won two out of four singles flights before the match was called for the night. Darling and Herlein posted the victories for SAU with Darling prevailing 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 and Herlein pulling away 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4.
Once play resumed Wednesday morning, Mayotte earned a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7, 10-2 at No. 5 singles win to seal the victory.
Later in the day, the Cougars were back on the court facing an NCAA Division II opponent, Saint Joseph's College (5-1). Spring Arbor managed to take one of the doubles matches, but the Pumas proved to be too much in singles play, winning three out of the four matches completed.
Herlein and Fitzpatrick recorded an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles and sophomore Jacob Byrd captured a 6-2, 7-6 victory at No. 6 singles.
Spring Arbor (5-11) will wrap up its spring trip with a match against Ashford University on Thursday, Mar. 12 at 8 a.m.
