SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Trine University in its first home match of the spring season on Monday.
The pair of John Hall and Tony Mayotte earned a point for the Cougars at No. 2 doubles with an 8-2 win. The Thunder (7-4), however, would take the advantage into singles play after handing SAU losses at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, Spring Arbor tried to slow down the red-hot Thunder, who entered as winners of four straight matches. Jesse DeBoer earned a straight set win at No. 2 singles while Andrew Herlein captured his fifth consecutive victory at No. 4 singles. Mayotte nearly edged out TU's Judson Quinn at No. 5 singles, but ultimately fell in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Trine would go on to take claim points at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to seal the win.
The Cougars (5-13) return to action against Calvin College on Wednesday, Apr. 1 at 4 p.m.
