SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team picked up two wins in as many days after cruising past Rochester College 9-0 on Friday night and edging out Greenville College 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars have now won three straight matches, improving their record to 6-5 this spring with an 8-13 mark overall this season.
Against Rochester (0-10), Spring Arbor was handed a 2-0 advantage before ever getting underway as the Warriors were forced to default one doubles and one singles match due to playing with only five players.
Michael Darling and Jesse DeBoer won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while Andrew Herlein and Andrew Fitzpatrick rolled to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, the Cougars swept all five matches in straight sets while dropping just seven games total. Darling and DeBoer posted identical 6-0, 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, while Herlein, Tony Mayotte and Fitzpatrick each prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 through No. 5 singles.
On Saturday, Spring Arbor faced off against a red-hot Greenville (12-2) squad that entered the match as winners of nine straight. However, the Cougars pounced on the visiting Panthers by claiming all three doubles matches and the first two singles matches to clinch the victory. Greenville came out on top in the final four matches, but it would be too little, too late.
John Hall notched a pair of wins on the day. The junior, along with his partner Mayotte, triumphed 8-5 at No. 2 doubles before he breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Jacob Byrd also earned a straight-set win at No. 6 singles.
Spring Arbor will wrap up the campaign with back-to-back road matches at Davenport University on Thursday, Apr. 16 and Cornerstone University on Tuesday, Apr. 21.
