FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team used a hot start and held on to defeat the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) 5-4 in its season opener on Tuesday.
It was the sixth straight season-opening win for SAU while Saint Francis fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Crossroads League with the loss.
The Cougars opened the afternoon with a clean sweep in doubles play. Senior Jesse DeBoer and freshman Nick Romano held on for a tight 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Vincent McShane and Jacob Byrd teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-4 victory while the pair of sophomore Thomas Hall and freshman Josh Scott prevailed 8-6 at the No. 3 position.
Saint Francis clawed its way back into the match with four wins in singles competition, but Scott would triumph at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-3 before Romano clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.
Spring Arbor will return home for three straight matches beginning with Bethel College on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m.
