COLUMBIA, Ky. – A pair of first half goals were not enough to put away the defending national champions as the No. 8-ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team and No. 1 Lindsey Wilson College battled to a 2-2 draw on Friday night at the Lindsey Wilson Classic.
Spring Arbor jumped on top of LWC with a goal from senior Nikki Bonnema in the 29th minute, and freshman Casandra Besteman notched her first collegiate goal just before halftime to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.
The Cougars were all over Lindsey Wilson through the first 45 minutes, however, the Blue Raiders proved worthy of their No. 1 ranking, battling back with two second half goals, including one in the 85th minute to level the score.
Before Lindsey Wilson found the equalizer, the Cougars nearly put the game away, but a shot attempt by sophomore Renee Broekhuizen rolled just wide. Broekhuizen got in behind the Blue Raider defense and, when the LWC goalkeeper came out to challenge, she let a shot go that ending up missing right.
Moments later, the Blue Raiders tallied their second goal. Sanna Svensson fired a shot from the top of the box to the upper corner of the goal that SAU keeper Sarah Yancer was able to get a piece of, pushing it off the crossbar, but would redirect into the net.
The Cougars outshot the home team 17-10 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Spring Arbor (4-1-1) will be back in action tomorrow when it takes on No. 5 Martin Methodist College (3-1-0) at 6 p.m. EST.
