SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Freshman Morris Kamara had a pair of goals as the No. 23 ranked Spring Arbor University men's soccer team kicked off Crossroads League action with a 3-0 victory over Huntington University on Saturday night.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 6-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference while the Foresters dropped to 5-4-1 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
"Our performances have been really building the past few weeks and tonight was really positive," said head coach Nathan Miller. "Another clean is crucial and it's good to see the guys improve so much in the final third. Mo really gave the team a hard working shift and did all the right things."
The Cougars controlled the match from the opening whistle and wasted little time finding the back of the net. Less than a minute in, junior Adam Hunt played a perfect through ball that allowed Kamara to run on and net his first goal of the night.
That's how the score would stay until the closing seconds of the first half. With less than 10 seconds remaining, a corner kick from sophomore Cory Swartzendruber found the head of junior Michael Caccavo at the back post, and Caccavo finished to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead at the break.
Spring Arbor put the match out of reach early in the second half when Hunt found Kamara again in the 48th minute. In almost an identical play, Hunt played Kamara through again, and Kamara beat the HU goalkeeper near post.
Junior goalkeeper Cobi Piper stopped both shots he faced on the night.
The Cougars registered 17 shots compared to the Foresters' 11, and held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
"Our fans like always were awesome and really pushed us on," added Miller. "Good start to the league season, but we are always looking to improve and be sharpened."
Up next, Spring Arbor travels to Goshen, Indiana for match against Goshen College (1-8, 0-1 CL) on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m.
