GREENVILLE, Ill. – After suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to No. 19 Lindenwood University-Belleville on Friday night, the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team bounced back with a 4-1 victory over Greenville College on Saturday.
In a very physical match against Lindenwood-Belleville (2-1), the Cougars held their own against one of the top teams in the nation. The two sides were scoreless through 84 minutes before SAU was whistled for a foul in the box leading to a Lynx penalty kick. Leonardo Ferri converted on the chance and the home team would hold on for the win.
Junior goalkeeper Cobi Piper was solid between the pipes registering six saves.
"We performed at a very high level tonight," said head coach Nathan Miller following the match. "LUB is a very good side and it could have gone either way, but these games are building blocks for us. The PK call was certainly brutal, but you can't expect any favors that far from home. This group is tough and resilient and we will just keep on working as a unit."
Spring Arbor showed its resiliency the next night by tallying a season-high four goals in a dominant performance against Greenville.
Cory Swartzendruber and Morris Kamara scored their first career goals in the first half to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Michael Caccavo would also find the back of the net in the 30th minute to put SAU on top 3-0 at the break.
Greenville (1-2) would tally a quick score to open the second half, but Kamara answered for the Cougars with his second goal of the night in the 66th minute.
"The first half from us had a lot of quality," noted Miller. "We were sharp and it was fun to see Cory and Mo get debut goals. The whole group understood that the second half did not come close to our standard. We took our foot off the gas and didn't play to the level we strive for. But, it was a good weekend, we could have easily come away 2-0. But this is about the process, improving as a team, growing closer together and building to our future best."
Up next, Spring Arbor (3-2) will return home to host Roosevelt University on Friday, Sept. 11 at 4:30 p.m. and Cornerstone University on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
