SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team began on a stretch of three matches in four days with an 8-1 setback to Davenport University on Tuesday and a narrow 5-4 loss to Calvin College on Wednesday.
In the match against Davenport (8-9), freshman Sam Head picked up the Cougars' lone point. Head earned a thrilling three-set win at No. 6 singles, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.
Spring Arbor looked to bounce back against Calvin (5-2). The team of freshman Nick Romano and senior Jesse DeBoer started the afternoon with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Knights prevailed at No. 2 doubles and escaped with a close 8-6 win at the No. 3 position.
The Cougars battled back though picking up three singles points, but it would not be enough. Romano and DeBoer posted straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 while junior Vincent McShane triumphed 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 at No. 5.
Spring Arbor (6-14) will travel to Angola, Indiana to take on Trine University (4-3) on Friday, Apr. 1 with first serve set for 4 p.m.
