Cougars notch 8-1 win over Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's tennis team collected a commanding 8-1 win over Trine University on Monday afternoon.

The win improved the Cougars' record to 6-7 this spring and 8-14 overall. The Thunder dipped to 5-5 on the season.

Spring Arbor swept doubles play and won five of the six singles matches. Senior Jesse DeBoer and freshman Nick Romano won their third straight at No. 1 doubles, posting an 8-2 victory. Senior Tony Mayotte and junior Vincent McShane also won by an 8-2 margin at No. 2 doubles while junior Jacob Byrd and sophomore Thomas Hall edged out their opponents 8-6 at No. 3.

Four of Spring Arbor's five singles wins came in straight sets. Romano earned his team-leading 13th victory of the season while DeBoer and freshman Sam Head both achieved their 11th. Fellow freshman Josh Scott also won in two sets, and Byrd battled back to win in a third set tie break.

Up next, the Cougars will host Olivet College (1-7) on Thursday, Apr. 14 at 4 p.m. before welcoming Cornerstone University (10-8) to town in the final match of the season on Tuesday, Apr. 19 at 4 p.m.
