Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Top five ranked Davenport University was too much for the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team in their biggest road test of the year. The Cougars played well throughout the contest offensively, creating multiple chances and putting pressure on the Panthers backline. But, for the first time all season, Spring Arbor struggled to defend in its own box.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: #5 Davenport 5, Spring Arbor 1
LOCATION: Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex | Grand Rapids, Mich.
RECORDS: Davenport 5-1-0, Spring Arbor 5-1-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The home team did not waste any time getting on the board. Taking advantage of a free kick right outside the box, sophomore Jeppe Marquardsen found the bottom right corner for his first goal of the season in the 13th minute.
- Only three minutes later, Tyler Collishaw found teammate TJ Ifaturoti, who buried the ball in the back of the net to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. The deficit was the first time the Cougars conceded two goals in a game all season.
- Davenport was not done in the first half as they would add one more goal on a magnificent diving header from Yovany Duran in the 32nd minute.
- Jake Love and Tyler Collishaw would both add goals midway through the second half to give the home team a 5-0 lead.
- Morris Kamara scored his third goal of the year late in the second half to put the Cougars on the board.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Davenport only posted six shots on goal all night, but they converted five of those six shots into goals.
- The road loss is the Cougars first loss of the season, and the first time in 36 games they have surrendered more than two goals in a game.
- Davenport outshot Spring Arbor 9-6. However, the Cougars posted four corner kicks to the Panthers' zero.
QUOTES FROM THE HEAD COACH
- "This obviously is a painful result for the team. We got punished for a few mistakes and they have some real quality."
- "We gave up six shots on goal and conceded five, so that is tough to swallow. We really struggled defending in our own box, which is usually a hallmark of ours."
- "The irony is that we actually played pretty well at times, broke them down, and created great chances. We had more of the ball, but they took literally every chance that fell their way. They were ruthless."
