Harris, Cougars Down No. 13 Southeastern

LAKELAND, Fla. – Sophomore pitcher Brody Harris went the distance allowing just three runs while fanning a career-high eight batters to lead the Spring Arbor University baseball team to a 5-3 win over No. 13 Southeastern University on Tuesday.

The win was the third straight for the Cougars as they improved to 4-1 on the season. After winning 17 of their first 23 games, the Fire have dropped three of their last four and now sit at 18-9 overall.

Southeastern struck first after pushing a run across in the bottom of the first inning, but Spring Arbor responded with four unanswered runs over the next three frames and would not look back.

Freshman Conner Lengerich and sophomore Christian Davis hit back-to-back doubles in the second to even the score before senior JP Maracani ripped a triple to right and scored on an error in the third inning to put SAU on top. The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the fourth, doing all their damage with two outs. Freshman Jack Driscoll scored on a Nick Harris infield single, and Harris would eventually come around on another Fire miscue.

Southeastern closed the gap to one, 4-3, with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth inning, but Harris would shut the Fire down from there, allowing only one hit the rest of the way.

It was the third career complete game for the southpaw, who limited one of the nation's top offensive teams to just two earned runs and eight hits over nine innings.

Senior Tyler Baker finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate. Davis and Maracani collected two hits apiece while junior Mitchel Patterson also recorded an RBI single.

Up next, the Cougars will face off against the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida tomorrow at 2 p.m.
