SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spencer Goebel continued his recent run of dominance by stifling the Saint Francis (Ind.) bats in game one of Friday's doubleheader. The junior right-hander threw his second complete game shutout of the season as the Spring Arbor University baseball team earned a 3-0 win before falling to USF 1-0 in game two.
Chris Wegrzyn scored on an RBI groundout by Tyler Baker in the bottom of the first, and the Cougars added another run in the second following a USF error.
Saint Francis (8-22, 2-8 Crossroads League) threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with nobody out. However, Goebel would strike out the side to escape the jam unharmed.
Goebel allowed just three hits while fanning a career-high 11 batters to earn his third win of the season.
Both teams struggled at the plate in game two, combining for nine hits and just one run – scored by Saint Francis in the second inning.
Spring Arbor had its chances offensively, but was unable to find the timely hit it needed.
Freshman Sam Memmelaar suffered the loss despite 5.1 solid innings of work. The southpaw scattered five hits and struck out one batter. Junior Heath Sullivan tossed 1.2 innings of shutout relief.
The Cougars (14-7, 7-3 Crossroads League) will wrap up the season series with Saint Francis on Saturday, Apr. 4 beginning at 1 p.m.
