Box Score 2 FROSTPROOF, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team opened the 2016 Warner Invitational with a pair of wins on Thursday. The Cougars defeated Saint Ambrose University 7-2 and knocked off Siena Heights University 14-9 in the nightcap.
The wins snapped Spring Arbor's four-game skid and improved its record to 3-4 on the year.
After a slow start, the Cougars got the scoring started in the fourth inning against Saint Ambrose (4-5). Jonathan Newman reached on error to start the frame and would later come around to score on a squeeze bunt by Nick Harris.
Spring Arbor would score in each of the final four innings, including three in the fifth – highlighted by an RBI double from Jeremiah Johnson.
Mitchel Patterson was terrific on the mound tossing six shutout innings before the Fighting Bees tallied two runs in the seventh. The senior left-hander scattered eight hits and struck out five to earn his first win of the season.
In the second game of the afternoon, Spring Arbor outslugged Siena Heights (3-1). The Cougars did most of their damage in the second inning pushing nine runs across the plate. Newman accounted for four of those runs after smacking a two-run home run and a two-RBI triple.
Spring Arbor would plate two runs in the third on a two-RBI double by Conner Lengerich, and add three more in the fifth when Johnson drove in three with a double.
Sam Memmelaar picked up his first win of the campaign. Memmelaar surrendered five earned runs over 5.1 innings of work while fanning four.
Spring Arbor will be right back in action tomorrow against the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) and Warner University. The Cougars face Saint Francis at 12:15 p.m. and first pitch against Warner is slated for 3:15 p.m.
