Box Score 2 AVE MARIA, Fla. – The Spring Arbor University baseball team's bats went silent in a doubleheader loss at Ave Maria University on Saturday. The Cougars were shutout in both games falling 6-0 and 2-0.
In game one, Ave Maria (9-13) held a 1-0 lead through four innings, but broke things wide open with five runs in the fifth. The Gyrenes belted two home runs in the frame, including a grand slam, to hand the Cougars their first setback of the season.
Spring Arbor was limited to just three hits in the contest.
Mitchel Patterson suffered the loss after surrendering six runs over 4.2 innings of work. Joe Romence pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief while striking out three.
Despite the lack of offense, Spring Arbor created several scoring chances in the second game, but were never able to get the key hit they needed. The Cougars left 10 runners on base in the game, including the bases loaded in the fifth inning.
Ave Maria did all of its damage in the third inning. With two outs, the Gyrenes got a two-RBI triple from Rico Soto.
Nick Harris had two hits while Tyler Reed recorded one.
Sam Memmelaar allowed two runs over 2.2 innings pitched in the loss. Drew Weston was terrific out of the bullpen, shutting out the Gyrenes over the final 3.1 frames and surrendering just two hits.
Spring Arbor (1-2) will return to action against No. 15 Keiser University (13-5) on Monday, Mar. 7 at 1 p.m.
