Baseball takes series with Saturday sweep over Grace

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – After splitting a doubleheader on Friday, the Spring Arbor University baseball team took both games in Saturday's twinbill with Grace College, 4-0 and 2-1, behind a pair of outstanding pitching performances.

Duncan Patterson and Sam Memmelaar combined to give up just one run on nine hits over 14 innings. In game one, Patterson struck out a season-high eight batters on his way to the first complete game shutout of his career. Memmelaar followed with a brilliant outing in the nightcap. The left-hander surrendered only one run scattering five hits while fanning seven batters – matching his career-high.

The Cougars coupled just enough offense with its overpowering pitching staff to earn the wins. In the opener, SAU did all of its damage in the third inning scoring four times. With runners on first and second and one out, Conner Lengerich cleared the bases with a double down the right field line. Two batters later, Jeremiah Johnson crushed a two-run homer to left field.

Grace (19-23, 6-14 CL) scored first in game two, taking a 1-0 advantage in the third inning, but Spring Arbor rallied late to come from behind. A Lengerich home run in the fifth put the Cougars on the board, and an RBI single by Nick Harris in the sixth gave SAU the lead.

Lengerich continues to tear the cover off the ball, finishing with four hits, three RBI and two runs scored on the afternoon. He has now hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games and ranks second in the Crossroads League with a .378 batting average.

Spring Arbor (16-18, 11-7 CL) begins a five-game homestand this week highlighted by conference doubleheaders against Mount Vernon Nazarene University (25-16, 7-7 CL) on Tuesday, Apr. 26 and Goshen College (19-29, 11-11 CL) on Thursday, Apr. 28.
