Box Score 2 SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor University junior Tyler Reed had three hits and six RBI Tuesday afternoon to help lead the Cougars to a doubleheader split against Taylor University in Crossroads League action.
Taylor (21-11, 4-1 CL), which entered the afternoon at the top of the league standings, posted an 11-7 win in game one, but Spring Arbor bounced back to take game two 10-4.
The Trojans got the scoring started right away in the opener, plating four runs in the top of the first inning. The Cougars answered, however, using three TU errors to push four runs across to even the score.
A grand slam by Taylor's Lincoln Reed in the top of the fourth gave the visitors an 8-4 lead, but SAU would battle back in the home half of the fifth. Jeremiah Johnson's one out double drove in Conner Lengerich, and Reed followed with a two-RBI single to right-center field to trim the deficit to one, 8-7.
The late rally would not be enough, though, as the Trojans added three insurance runs in the sixth and held on for the win.
Reed went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Johnson and Lengerich each scored twice.
Spencer Goebel suffered the loss allowing eight runs in five innings of work. The right-hander finished the afternoon with seven strikeouts – matching his season-high.
In the nightcap, the Cougars jumped all over the Trojans scoring eight runs in the first two innings. Reed brought home the first two runs with a two-RBI double in the first. Jonathan Newman would also drive in a run with an RBI groundout. Spring Arbor strung together five straight hits in the second inning to score five more runs, including RBI hits from Holley, Johnson, Reed and Newman.
Taylor would push across a single run in the third inning and two more in the fourth to get within four, 8-4, but the Cougars scored two more runs in the fifth to help put the game away.
Reed collected two hits and three RBI while Newman also posted two hits and drove in two.
Brody Harris pitched 5.1 innings surrendering just three earned runs and striking out six to record his third win of the season. Mitchel Patterson tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Spring Arbor (8-12, 3-3 CL) will be right back in action tomorrow against Taylor with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 2 p.m.
